Capacity Building

The aim of the DMRC of SSK, Lucknow is to provide comprehensive disaster management knowledge and skills to enhance the capabilities of community by training the members of different Community Based Disaster Management Committees (CBDMCs) who have key responsibilities in disaster management specially in flooding context.
It can be equally useful for the development professionals and others who effectively integrate disaster management programme into their development programs & policies. The modules are developed with an intension to develop key skills and adopt practical attitudes using diverse training methods and reflecting on various key issues raised during discussions and useful sessions.
Training modules and materials for Community Based Disaster Management Committees (CBDMCs)-capacity building are developed, tested and disseminated. Based on the identified need for a standardized training framework and methodical training material for CBDMCs, study of existing training materials and their review was seen as first step. Existing training materials on the following topics were collected, studied and reviewed towards the suitability of using them for the trainings of CBDMCs:

Objective of Training Module:

• Assessing Training needs of the community in disaster preparedness.
• Ensuring the development of effective strategies and system for disaster prevention, mitigation, response & recovery.
• Development of training kit on the entire six subjects mentioned above, which deals with disaster risk reduction.
• Providing adequate knowledge on all six topics to the CBDMCs and Partner NGOs for disaster preparedness.
• Ensuring social inclusion of marginalized communities specially women, disabled, children and elderly people in disaster risk reduction.

Training Methodology


Interactive Group Work – discussions, games, case studies, brainstorming and exercises/simulations will make group work interactive. Often the participants will be divided into pairs to larger groups in order for group work to be completed.

Lecture – instructor led information sharing

Demonstration – instructor will demonstrate a process in front of the group of participants.

Individual Exercises/practices – work assigned to individual participants such as assignments (work sheets, research papers, readings etc.) and experiments.

Audience Definitions

Taskforces of Eight CBDMCs in the project area as well as representatives of six partner NGOs are the audience for the training. ToT will be organized for them. The total beneficiaries of these ongoing efforts are 48,722 individuals including above two categories.
